Abstract

Northern Nigeria is home to roughly half of the country's people, one of West Africa's oldest commercial traditions and some of its highest poverty and financial exclusion rates. This paper examines how entrepreneurship and business ownership have developed in the region and what limits their growth today. It draws on nation al enterprise and poverty surveys, financial inclusion data and the wider literature on entrepreneurship in developing economies. The paper argues that the north's enterprise base is large, deeply rooted in trade and agriculture, and overwhelmingly informal and micro-sized. Growth is held back by weak access to finance, unreliable power, insecurity, thin skills pipelines and social norms that limit women's participation. At the same time, new agro-industrial investments, non-interest finance, digital payments and regional trade agreements open real opportunities. The paper closes with practical recommendations for state governments, financial institutions, educational institutions and development partners, and with a research agenda for the region.
