Abstract

Yoga, an ancient Indian discipline rooted in physical postures, breath regulation, and meditative practice, has increasingly been recognized as a valuable component of contemporary physical education. While physical education has traditionally emphasized sports skills, games, and physiological fitness parameters, growing scientific and pedagogical interest has turned toward yoga as a means of addressing fitness, mental health, and holistic growth simultaneously. This conceptual review synthesizes existing literature to examine the theoretical and practical linkages between yoga and physical education, with specific attention to three interconnected domains: physical fitness, mental well-being, and holistic development. Drawing upon secondary sources including peer-reviewed journal articles, books, and policy documents, the review traces the philosophical foundations of yoga, outlines its physiological and psychological benefits, and discusses its increasing integration into school and college physical education curricula, particularly within the Indian context under the National Education Policy 2020, Khelo India, and Fit India initiatives. The review finds converging evidence that regular yogic practice enhances flexibility, cardiorespiratory efficiency, muscular strength, and balance, while simultaneously reducing stress, improving concentration, and fostering emotional regulation. Furthermore, yoga's emphasis on ethical and contemplative dimensions positions it as a vehicle for holistic development that extends beyond the physical-cognitive axis into social and value-based domains. The paper concludes by identifying implementation challenges, including inadequately trained instructors, curricular time constraints, and the need for standardized assessment, and offers recommendations for the systematic integration of yoga within physical education pedagogy.
