Abstract

The Dalit movement in Karnataka has been instrumental in challenging caste-based discrimination and promoting social justice, equality, and human dignity. Alongside socio-political activism, Kannada Dalit literature has emerged as a powerful medium for articulating the experiences of marginalized communities and fostering social transformation. This paper examines the relationship between the Dalit movement and the growth of Kannada Dalit literature, with particular emphasis on the contributions of prominent writers such as Siddalingaiah, Devanur Mahadeva, Aravind Malagatti, K. B. Siddaiah, and Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy. It also highlights the role of the Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (DSS) in strengthening Dalit consciousness and encouraging literary activism in Karnataka.

The study adopts a qualitative and descriptive approach based on secondary sources, including books, journal articles, research papers, and literary works. It analyzes key themes in Kannada Dalit literature, including caste oppression, identity, self-respect, equality, constitutional values, and resistance. The findings reveal that Kannada Dalit literature has documented the socio-economic and cultural realities of Dalit communities while serving as an effective tool for social awareness, democratic participation, and cultural empowerment. By challenging caste hierarchies and advocating the constitutional ideals of justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity, Dalit literature has significantly enriched Kannada literary traditions and contributed to broader social reform in Karnataka. The study concludes that the Dalit movement and Kannada Dalit literature are complementary forces that continue to promote social inclusion, democratic values, and human dignity.
