This paper looks at how Savitribai Phule (1831-1897) changed women's education in India during British rule. She was India's first modern woman teacher and headmistress. At that time, society did not allow women, especially lower-caste women, to get an education. Savitribai fought against these unfair rules. Through her new ways of teaching, the schools she started with her husband Jyotirao Phule, her social work, and her writings, she turned education into a tool for freedom. This paper studies her ideas about education, the schools she opened, her other social work, and why she still matters today.
Savitribai Phule, women's education, social reform, caste discrimination, colonial India, feminist teaching.
