Mathematics is frequently perceived by learners as a subject dominated by formulas, procedures and examination-oriented exercises. This perception can create a distance between classroom mathematics and the situations in which mathematical thinking is actually used. Real-life contexts provide an opportunity to reduce this distance by presenting mathematical ideas through familiar experiences such as shopping, budgeting, travel, measurement, construction, sports, weather, agriculture, household planning and interpretation of information. This conceptual paper examines the educational significance of using real-life contexts in mathematics learning. It discusses how contextual situations can support conceptual understanding, motivation, problem-solving, mathematical communication and transfer of learning. It also considers the distinction between meaningful contextualisation and the superficial addition of everyday examples. The paper argues that real-life contexts should not replace formal mathematical reasoning; rather, they should provide purposeful situations in which mathematical concepts can be developed, applied and interpreted. The paper proposes a classroom approach in which teachers move flexibly between concrete situations, mathematical representations, formal procedures and reflection on results. Attention is also given to local and culturally relevant contexts, technology-supported learning and assessment. The paper concludes that appropriately designed real-life mathematics can help learners recognise mathematics as a way of interpreting quantities, relationships, patterns and decisions in everyday life while preserving the conceptual structure of the discipline.
