In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), data science, and digital innovation, Computational Thinking (CT) has emerged as a vital 21st-century skill. The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 emphasizes the development of critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, and digital literacy among school students. While coding and technology often receive significant attention in discussions on computational thinking, mathematics remains the invisible engine that powers these competencies. Mathematical thinking nurtures logical reasoning, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithmic problem-solving—the very pillars of computational thinking. For middle school learners (Classes VI–VIII), mathematics provides numerous opportunities to develop CT skills through inquiry-based learning, mathematical modelling, puzzles, data analysis, and real-life problem-solving. This article examines the relationship between mathematics and computational thinking in the context of NEP 2020 and highlights practical approaches to fostering future-ready learners equipped for the AI-driven world.
