India and South Africa often call each other "natural partners", pointing to their shared history of struggle against colonialism and apartheid. This paper asks whether that shared past really explains how the two countries work together today. It examines their cooperation in three groupings, IBSA, BRICS and the G20, between 2004 and 2025. Drawing on the idea of "emerging middle powers", the paper argues that India and South Africa cooperate mainly because they share practical goals: a fairer trading system, a louder voice for developing countries in global institutions, and reform of the United Nations Security Council. Shared history makes this cooperation easier to explain to the public, but it does not determine it. The paper also shows that the partnership has clear limits. The two countries differ on nuclear questions, trade between them is unbalanced, and each plays a different role in its own region. The partnership is real, but it is selective.
