Abstract

In today's educational landscape, digital learning has become a key element of higher education. The rise of digital technologies, online learning platforms, virtual classrooms, digital libraries, educational applications, learning management systems, and multimedia resources has reshaped conventional methods of teaching and learning. Digital learning offers learners more flexibility, better accessibility, chances for self-directed learning, and access to a wide range of educational resources. Within higher education, it can foster interactive teaching, collaborative learning, ongoing assessment, research, professional growth, and the cultivation of digital competencies. This paper explores the function of digital learning in higher education, focusing particularly on teaching-learning processes, student engagement, accessibility, academic achievement, digital skills, teacher development, research, and institutional development. The paper also highlights key challenges tied to digital learning, such as the digital divide, insufficient technological infrastructure, limited digital competencies, connectivity issues, financial limitations, cybersecurity and privacy risks, and resistance to technological change. The study argues that successful digital learning in higher education depends on suitable infrastructure, teacher training, digital literacy, high-quality digital content, institutional support, and inclusive access to technology. Accordingly, digital learning ought to be seen not simply as a technological substitute for conventional education, but as a vital element of a flexible, learner-centred, and technology-enabled higher education system.
